Barrington Town Council Campaign Announcement
I’m Carl Kustell and I’m happy to announce that I am running for Barrington Town Council. I believe I can contribute to the focused leadership we need to navigate through challenging times. I believe deeply that every Barrington resident’s voice needs to be heard to build the community, continuity and cohesiveness necessary to achieve sustained progress at any level of government. I am running with deep respect for Councilors Weymouth, Hearn and Boyajian, who are stepping down. I have a great appreciation for their contributions and the drive to build on their progress toward enhancing Barrington’s livability, walkability and sustainability.
Most importantly, I will need input from as many residents as possible to adequately represent everyone.
My campaign needs to be our campaign. Since the night I received the Democratic endorsement, I have focused on the local economy, the environment, and our shared values.
Economics: We must make every decision with the knowledge that a lot of residents and small businesses are enduring serious economic stressors. Simultaneously, we can’t let the current recession stop us from making progress toward the town’s long-term plan.
Environment: The current Town Council has made excellent progress toward making Barrington more environmentally sustainable. We will build upon that progress. We also face the present and growing threat of sea level rise, a threat for which we must be fully prepared.
Values: We believe in education, equality and community. We do not compromise when it comes to maintaining excellence in education. We want everyone, regardless of race, gender, LGBT status, age, religion or disability status to be welcome here. The “Hate has no home here” lawn signs, large Black Lives Matter demonstration on County Road and Pride flags throughout town reflect our values. Given national events, there is no more critical time than now to reaffirm our values and to ensure that we live up to them.
My wife and I, along with our three boys, are truly grateful to live in Barrington. After nearly two decades practicing law, I’ve built the analytical and advocacy skills necessary to serve the town well. I have enhanced my legal background, serving on boards for several mission-driven community organizations and I loved working as a Congressional staffer in D.C. after graduating from Cornell Law School. I have enjoyed helping Democratic candidates, serving on the Barrington Economic Development Commission and coaching Barrington youth sports.
I hope I can earn your vote and I would be grateful for your support, whether financial to Friends of Carl Kustell or volunteer. But especially at this time of extraordinary challenges, I need to hear your voice in order to represent you most effectively. Please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org. I’d love to know your thoughts.
